IEC 60079 Ex Marking, Decoded Element by Element

An Ex marking string like Ex db IIC T4 Gb looks cryptic until you learn that each field answers a specific question about where the device may go. This page decodes the marking element by element, so a technician or engineer reading a nameplate can tell what protection it uses, which atmospheres it suits, and how hot its surface may get. It is a reading guide, not a selection authority: the acceptance of any device for a zone stays with qualified hazardous-area personnel.

IEC 60079 marking decoded in one line: An IEC 60079 Ex marking reads left to right as fields: Ex signals explosion protection, the protection-method letters (such as d, e, i, p, n) name the strategy, an equipment protection level letter (a, b, or c) states the assured protection, the group (I, II with IIA to IIC, or III for dust) names the atmosphere, and the temperature class (T1 to T6) caps the surface temperature. Each field must suit the classified area.

The Fields in Order

Take a marking such as Ex db IIC T4 Gb and read it as a sentence. Ex declares the equipment is built for explosive atmospheres. The lowercase letters immediately after, here db, carry two things: the protection method (d for flameproof) and the equipment protection level (b). The group follows: IIC names the gas subdivision, with IIC being the most demanding gas group. T4 is the temperature class, and the final Gb repeats the equipment protection level tied to the atmosphere type, G for gas.

Each field is independent and each must be satisfied for the device to be acceptable in a given location. A device can carry the right protection method but the wrong gas group, or the right group but too high a temperature class, and any single mismatch disqualifies it. Reading the fields in order forces you to check each one rather than glancing at the Ex prefix and assuming the rest is fine.

The gas group and temperature class deserve attention because they are the fields most often mismatched. Gas groups run IIA, IIB, IIC in increasing ease of ignition, so a device rated IIC covers the harder atmospheres and can be used where IIA or IIB is required, but not the reverse. The protection-method letter ties back to the series structure: d points to flameproof, i to intrinsic safety, p to pressurization. Recognizing the letter tells you the strategy without reading the certificate body.

Matching the Marking to the Zone

The marking only means something against the zone it is going into. The equipment protection level and atmosphere letter together (Ga, Gb, Gc for gas; Da, Db, Dc for dust) map to the zones defined during area classification: the highest protection level suits the most hazardous zone, and lower levels suit less hazardous ones. A Gb-marked device suits Zone 1, while Zone 0 demands the higher Ga level.

So the full reading discipline is: decode every field, then check each against the area's classification. Protection method must be one part 14 allows for the zone, the group must cover the actual gas or dust present, the temperature class must sit below the ignition temperature of that substance, and the equipment protection level must meet the zone requirement.

Because a single mismatch can defeat the protection, this reading supports but does not replace formal equipment selection. Use the decode to understand a nameplate quickly, and route the acceptance decision through qualified hazardous-area personnel and the site's own procedures, which is where the site-specific ignition temperatures and installation details are held.

What does Ex db IIC T4 mean?

It means the device is explosion-protected using flameproof enclosure protection (d) at equipment protection level b, suits the most demanding gas group IIC, and has a maximum surface temperature within temperature class T4. In plain terms it contains any internal explosion, works with harder-to-ignite gases up to and including hydrogen and acetylene, and stays below the T4 surface-temperature limit. It must still be matched to the specific zone and substance in your area classification.

Can a IIC-rated device be used where IIB is required?

Yes. Gas groups run IIA, IIB, IIC in order of increasing ignition difficulty, and a device certified for the higher group covers the lower ones, so IIC-rated equipment is acceptable where IIA or IIB is required. The reverse is not true: a IIB device may not be used in a IIC atmosphere. Always confirm the temperature class and equipment protection level match as well, since group alone does not make a device acceptable.
