A ball valve is a quarter-turn valve that shuts off flow fast and seals tightly, which makes it one of the most widely used isolation valves in oil and gas. This guide explains how a ball valve works, the difference between floating and trunnion designs, full versus reduced bore, and where ball valves fit.

Ball Valve in one line: A ball valve is a quarter-turn isolation valve that uses a rotating ball with a bore through its center. When the bore lines up with the pipe, flow passes straight through; a 90-degree turn of the ball blocks the line completely. Its fast operation, tight bubble-tight seal, and low torque make it the default block valve for many oil and gas services.

How a Ball Valve Works

A drilled ball sits between two seat rings inside the valve body. Rotating the stem a quarter turn swings the ball's bore into or out of alignment with the pipe. Because it moves only 90 degrees, a ball valve opens and closes quickly and the handle position gives an unmistakable open/closed indication - inline with the pipe means open, across it means closed.

The seats, usually a polymer such as PTFE or a metal seat for high temperature and abrasive service, press against the ball to make the seal. This design gives very tight shutoff and low leakage, which is why ball valves are favored for isolation and emergency shutdown duty.

Floating vs Trunnion, Full vs Reduced Bore

In a floating ball design the ball is held only by the two seats; line pressure pushes it against the downstream seat to seal, which works well up to moderate sizes and pressures. In a trunnion-mounted design the ball is fixed on upper and lower shafts and the seats are spring-loaded against it, cutting operating torque and suiting large-diameter, high-pressure pipeline valves.

A full-bore (full-port) ball valve has a bore equal to the pipe ID, giving near-zero pressure drop and allowing pigs to pass; a reduced-bore valve is smaller and cheaper but restricts flow. Ball valves appear on wellhead flowlines, manifolds, pig launchers and receivers, pipeline block valves, and skid isolation. Like other quarter-turn valves they are simple to actuate for remote or automated shutoff.

Selecting a Ball Valve for the Service

Selection starts with the fluid, not the catalog. Clean, moderate-temperature hydrocarbons suit soft seats such as PTFE or PEEK, which give the bubble-tight shutoff ball valves are known for. Abrasive, high-temperature, or dirty service pushes toward metal seats, trading some tightness for survivability. Sour service adds material constraints of its own - alloys selected per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 - and the body rating follows the piping class, not personal preference.

Beyond materials, run down the functional questions. Does the line get pigged? Then the valve must be full bore, or the pig stops there - a detail that matters anywhere between a pig launcher and its receiver. Is the valve part of the emergency shutdown scheme? Then fire-safe construction tested to a recognized standard such as API 607 belongs on the datasheet, along with actuator sizing that guarantees closure at worst-case differential pressure. Will it be automated later? Specifying an ISO 5211 mounting pad up front makes adding an actuator a bolt-on job instead of a re-machining exercise.

The Body Cavity: Trapped Pressure and DBB

When a ball valve closes, a small volume of fluid is trapped in the body cavity between the two seats. That trapped volume matters twice. Thermally: if the closed valve warms in the sun or from process heat, liquid in the cavity expands with nowhere to go, and cavity pressure can climb well above line pressure; designs answer this with self-relieving seats or an external cavity relief. And during maintenance: a cavity can hold pressure even when both sides of the valve are depressurized, so breaking into a valve without venting the cavity is a classic and avoidable injury. Verifying zero energy is a job for qualified personnel following the site's isolation procedures, every time.

The cavity also enables one of the ball valve's most useful tricks: double block and bleed. With the ball closed, both seats seal, and a small bleed connection on the cavity lets a technician vent it and prove that neither seat is passing before work proceeds. Whether a single trunnion valve is accepted as the isolation, or the site requires two separate valves with an open bleed between them, is defined by the site isolation standard, not by the valve brochure.

Two habits prevent most of these. First, never throttle a standard ball valve; a ball left partly open focuses erosive flow on one arc of the seat and ball, and the leak it causes appears later, when the valve is asked to hold. Second, cycle rarely operated valves on a schedule per the manufacturer's guidance, because a valve that has not moved in years is a valve you do not actually have. On automated valves, position and travel-time feedback trended in SCADA turn these habits into data: a slow rise in stroke time or operating torque is the valve asking for attention before it fails. When tight shutoff cannot be recovered, weighing alternatives such as a gate valve for the replacement is reasonable, but in most oil and gas isolation service the answer is another ball valve, selected better.

Is a ball valve on/off or throttling?

A ball valve is primarily an on/off isolation valve. Throttling with a standard ball erodes the seats and ball surface; special characterized or V-port ball valves exist for control service, but a plain ball valve should be run fully open or fully closed.

What is a trunnion ball valve used for?

Trunnion-mounted ball valves anchor the ball on shafts so line pressure does not load the seats, which lowers operating torque. That makes them the standard for large-diameter, high-pressure pipeline and transmission block valves.

Common causes are buildup in the body cavity - wax, scale, sand, or hydrates - seat swelling from chemical attack, a failing actuator or gearbox, or seats that have set after a long time in one position. Rising torque on an automated valve is worth trending, because the trend usually starts well before the valve actually sticks.
