What Is a Coating Holiday Detector?

A coating holiday detector is a high-voltage instrument used to find the tiny flaws - called holidays - in a protective coating before a pipe or vessel goes into service. A holiday is any pinhole, gap, or thin spot where the coating fails to fully cover the steel, and a single one can concentrate corrosion and drive up cathodic protection current demand. Holiday Detector in one line: A holiday detector, often called a jeep tester, is a device that applies a high voltage between an electrode swept over a coated surface and the underlying grounded steel; where the coating is continuous no current flows, but at a pinhole or gap the voltage arcs through to the steel and triggers an audible or visible alarm, pinpointing the defect. It is used to inspect coatings for holidays before burial or commissioning so that each flaw can be repaired while it is still accessible and cheap to fix.

How a Holiday Detector Works

The principle is electrical. An intact dielectric coating is an insulator, so if you apply a high enough voltage across it and the coating is continuous, no current flows. A holiday detector exploits this by connecting one terminal to the bare steel as a ground and sweeping the other terminal - typically a conductive brush, spring, or wand electrode - across the coated surface. Where the coating is sound, nothing happens. Where there is a pinhole or gap, the voltage finds the short path to steel, an arc jumps the defect, and the detector sounds an alarm and often sparks visibly at the exact spot.

The test voltage is matched to the coating thickness and type, because the voltage must be high enough to spark through a true holiday but not so high that it punctures sound coating and creates the very defects it is looking for. Setting the correct voltage for the specific coating is a key part of doing the test properly. The inspector marks each detected holiday for repair, and the coated surface is then swept again after repairs to confirm it is clean.

High-voltage detectors are used for thicker coatings such as fusion bonded epoxy and multi-layer systems, while a separate low-voltage wet-sponge technique is used for very thin coatings. Both are looking for the same thing - a break in the barrier - but the high-voltage spark test is the one associated with pipeline external coatings and is what most people mean by a jeep test.

Why One Small Holiday Matters

It is tempting to think a pinhole in an otherwise perfect coating is trivial, but the opposite is true. On a coated pipeline the coating is doing almost all the corrosion prevention, so the corrosion drive that would otherwise spread over the whole surface is instead concentrated onto the tiny bare area at a holiday. That concentration can produce fast, localized pitting at the defect, driving a small pit through the wall long before general corrosion would have thinned the line.

A holiday also changes the burden on the cathodic protection system. Cathodic protection has to supply current to every bit of bare steel, and every holiday is bare steel. A well-coated line with few holidays needs very little current; a line riddled with coating defects demands far more current and is harder and more expensive to keep protected. Catching holidays before burial keeps both the corrosion risk and the current demand low.

Because the defects are cheapest to fix while the pipe is still above ground and accessible, holiday detection is done at the point of no return - after coating and field-joint work but before the line is lowered into the ditch and covered. Once buried, a coating defect is invisible and can only be inferred indirectly, which is why the pre-burial spark test is so valuable.

Holiday Detection, Cathodic Protection, and Monitoring

Holiday detection is a one-time construction and repair inspection, not a continuous operational measurement, so it is not something a SCADA system reads directly. Its value is realized before the line is ever put in service: every holiday found and repaired is one less bare spot that cathodic protection has to carry and one less place corrosion can concentrate once the pipe is buried and out of reach.
