Why a Day Tank Sits Between Bulk Storage and the Engine

Engines and generators need fuel delivered at the right head, close by, and free of the sediment and water that settle out in large bulk tanks. Rather than draw fuel a long distance from a big storage tank on every stroke, a day tank keeps a small, ready volume right at the equipment. It acts as a buffer: the engine draws steadily from the day tank, and the day tank is periodically refilled from bulk storage.

The name captures the intent - it is sized to hold enough fuel to run for around a day, so a fuel-transfer upset or a delay in refilling bulk storage does not immediately stall the engine. For a standby generator, that buffer means the unit can start and run through an outage even if the automatic transfer from the main tank has a hiccup.

Positioned near the engine, the day tank also gives the fuel a place to settle and, in diesel systems, provides a return point for the hot fuel that the engine recirculates but does not burn. It is a small tank doing an outsized job in fuel-supply reliability.

Fill Pumps, Return Lines, and Level Switches

A day tank is refilled by a transfer pump that draws from the bulk tank. The pump is commanded by the day tank's level: when the level falls to a fill point, the pump runs and refills the tank; when it reaches a full point, the pump stops. Many diesel systems also have a return line, because engines circulate more fuel than they burn and send the warm surplus back - often to the day tank - so the day tank sees both the fill from bulk and the return from the engine.

The level instrumentation is layered. A normal fill and stop pair of setpoints handles routine topping up. A low-level alarm warns that the tank is running down faster than it is being filled, which could mean a failed transfer pump or an empty bulk tank. A high-level and high-high or overfill switch stops the fill and warns before fuel can back up or spill, independent of the normal stop point.

This arrangement means the engine sees a steady supply while the operator gets early warning of trouble. The redundancy in the switches matters because a day tank feeds critical equipment - a generator that runs out of fuel during an outage defeats the purpose of having it.

How SCADA Keeps a Day Tank Topped

A day tank is a natural fit for remote monitoring because it is small, critical, and driven by simple level logic.
