How a Deviation Indicator Works

A deviation indicator is built around zero error. It shows the difference between the process variable and the setpoint on a small scale whose center represents perfect control - the variable exactly on setpoint. When the loop is holding well, the indicator - often a short bar filling from the center, or a small diamond or marker - sits at or near that center point. When the process variable drifts above or below setpoint, the indicator moves off-center in the corresponding direction, and the further it moves, the larger the error.
