DIN Rail in one line: A DIN rail is a standardized metal mounting rail, most commonly the 35 mm top-hat profile, that runs horizontally inside a control panel so that terminal blocks, relays, power supplies, and other components can be snapped onto it and arranged in neat rows.

The DIN Rail Standard

The name comes from Deutsches Institut fur Normung, the German standards body that first defined the profile; the current standard is EN 60715 (formerly DIN 46277 and EN 50022). The dominant type is the 35 mm wide top-hat rail, so named because its cross-section resembles a hat, available in shallow (7.5 mm) and deep (15 mm) depths. Narrower G-type and mini rails exist for specific components. The rail is usually stamped steel, zinc-plated or stainless for corrosion resistance, and comes slotted for easy cutting and grounding.

The value of the standard is interchangeability. Because virtually every terminal block, control relay, miniature circuit breaker, and small power supply is built with a matching spring clip on its base, components from different manufacturers all snap onto the same rail. A technician can add, remove, or replace a device in seconds without drilling or screwing it to the panel back plate, which speeds both original assembly and later field modifications.

DIN Rail in Control Panels and the Field

Inside a SCADA or motor control panel, DIN rails are screwed horizontally onto the back plate in tiers. Rows of terminal blocks land field and internal wiring; other rails carry the PLC I/O, interposing relays, fuse holders, breakers, and the 24 VDC power supply. Wire duct runs between the rails to route and hide the wiring. This modular layout is what gives a well-built panel its organized, serviceable appearance.

In oil and gas RTU and instrument panels, especially those in remote enclosures exposed to vibration and temperature swings, the DIN rail keeps everything mechanically secure yet field-replaceable. When a monitoring platform such as Merobix is commissioned, the physical points it reads through the PLC almost always originate at terminal blocks clipped to a DIN rail, so the rail layout is effectively the wiring backbone that the whole data path rests on.

What size is a standard DIN rail?

The most common industrial DIN rail is the 35 mm top-hat profile defined by EN 60715, available in 7.5 mm and 15 mm depths. Narrower profiles such as the 15 mm G-rail and mini 15 mm and 32 mm rails exist for specific devices, but 35 mm top-hat covers the vast majority of terminal blocks and control components.

Can DIN rail be used for grounding?

Yes. Many terminal blocks and grounding terminals make electrical contact with the metal rail, and dedicated ground terminal blocks bond directly to it. The rail can then be tied to the panel's protective earth. Because reliability matters, critical grounds are usually also carried by a dedicated ground bar rather than relying on the rail alone.

Why is DIN rail so widely used?

It provides a universal mechanical standard: components from any manufacturer snap onto the same 35 mm rail, so panels assemble quickly and devices can be added or replaced without drilling.
