What Is a Gauging Tape and Bob?

For as long as tanks have held oil, the simplest way to find out how much is inside has been to drop a weighted steel tape down and read where the liquid wets it. That tool, the gauging tape and its bob, is still the reference method behind hand gauging. Gauging tape and bob in one line: A gauging tape and bob is a graduated steel measuring tape with a heavy weight, the bob, on its end, used to manually gauge the liquid level in a tank. The reader lowers it from a fixed reference point and reads the wetted cut line; an innage bob measures the depth of liquid from the bottom, while an outage bob measures the empty space from the top down.

The Steel Tape and Its Bob

A gauging tape is a long, narrow, graduated steel tape wound on a reel, chosen for steel because it does not stretch appreciably and holds its calibration. On the end hangs the bob, a machined weight that keeps the tape straight and plumb as it is lowered and gives it a defined tip to reference from. The tape and bob together let a person measure a liquid level many feet down inside a tank from a single point at the top.

The bob is not just a weight; it is part of the measuring system, and its length and shape are known so the reader can relate the tape graduation to the actual liquid surface. Because the tape reads in defined units from a fixed datum, the whole tool is a portable, mechanical level gauge that needs no power and no calibration in the field beyond keeping the tape and bob undamaged. Its simplicity is exactly why it endures as a reference.

The reference geometry of the tank is what makes the reading meaningful. A gauge is taken from a fixed reference point, a reference gauge point at the top hatch, down to either the tank bottom or a datum plate, a small fixed plate on the tank floor that gives a repeatable striking surface. The tape, the bob, and these fixed reference points form the measuring chain.

Innage and Outage, and Taking a Cut

There are two ways to gauge, and they use different bobs. An innage gauge measures the depth of liquid directly: the reader lowers the tape with a plumb innage bob until the bob touches the datum plate on the tank floor, then reads the height to which the liquid wetted the tape. That wetted reading is the innage, the height of product in the tank. An outage, or ullage, gauge instead measures the empty space above the liquid: the reader lowers an outage bob from the reference point until it just enters the liquid and reads how much tape is out to the liquid surface.

The reason the bob choice differs is the direction of the measurement. For innage, the bob has to reach and rest on the bottom datum, so it is a plumb bob shaped to strike the datum plate cleanly. For outage, the bob only needs to break the liquid surface from above, so an outage bob is configured for that top-down reference. Using the wrong bob for the method makes the cut hard to read or the reference point ambiguous.

Reading the tape is called taking a cut. The reader identifies the cut line, the sharp boundary on the tape between wet and dry, and reads the graduation there. Water-finding paste on the bob for the water bottom, or oil-indicating paste for the product surface, sharpens the cut so the exact height is clear. Good technique, striking the datum squarely, letting the surface settle, and reading the cut promptly, is what makes a hand gauge repeatable.

Hand Gauging Versus Automatic Tank Gauging

The tape and bob are accurate and trusted, but they are labor-intensive and intermittent. Every reading means a person climbing the tank, opening the hatch, lowering the tape, taking the cut, and recording it, and the level is only known at the instants someone does that. Between gauges the tank level is unknown, weather and safety limit when readings can be taken, and open-hatch gauging exposes the operator and vents vapor each time.

Automatic tank gauging replaces the periodic manual cut with a continuous measurement. A float, radar, servo, or hydrostatic device reads the level all the time and reports it electronically, so the level is always current without anyone climbing the tank. The physical tape and bob remain the reference for verification and calibration, but the day-to-day level comes from the instrument, not the hatch. That shift from a snapshot to a continuous signal is the whole point.
