Before a host can do anything useful with a HART device, it has to know what the device is, and the identity fields command 0 returns are how it finds out. The Fields That Name a Device

When a host issues command 0 to a HART device, the response is the device's identity, and three fields do the naming. The manufacturer ID identifies which company made the device, drawn from registered codes so that every HART manufacturer has a distinct identifier. The device type identifies the specific product model within that manufacturer's range, so a given manufacturer's pressure transmitter and its flowmeter carry different device types. Between them, these two fields tell a host exactly what kind of device it is dealing with.

The third field, the device ID, is the individual unit's unique serial number. Where manufacturer ID and device type identify a class of device, the device ID distinguishes one physical unit from every other unit of the same model. Two identical transmitters straight off the same line share a manufacturer ID and a device type but have different device IDs, which is what makes each addressable as a distinct instrument rather than as an interchangeable member of a class.

These identity fields are the foundation everything else builds on. How a Host Uses the Identity

The first thing a host does with the identity is decide how to interpret the device. The manufacturer ID and device type tell the host exactly which device description or DTM to load, so the host can present the device's real menus and understand its device-specific commands rather than falling back to generic access. This is the mechanical link between identifying a device and being able to configure it fully: the identity selects the description, and the description unlocks the model-specific features. The identity also anchors reliable addressing.
