What Is a Home Display on an HMI?

Every well-organized HMI has a place an operator starts from and a place they return to when they are done looking at a detail. That place is the home display, the top of the screen hierarchy, and its job is to give a fast, honest answer to a simple question: is my area of the plant healthy right now? The Top of the Display Hierarchy

Modern HMI design organizes operator screens into layers, and a widely used convention describes four levels: a Level 1 area overview at the top, Level 2 unit or process displays beneath it, Level 3 detailed equipment and loop displays below that, and Level 4 diagnostic or support displays at the bottom. The home display is the Level 1 screen. It is deliberately the broadest and shallowest view, showing the whole area at low detail, and it is the entry point from which an operator navigates downward toward whatever needs attention.

The value of this arrangement is that it matches how an operator's attention actually works. Most of the time nothing needs deep intervention, so the operator wants a wide, quiet overview that confirms everything is normal. When something does need attention, they drill down from the home display through the layers - area to unit to loop - narrowing their focus as they go, and when the task is finished they climb back to home. The hierarchy gives every screen a defined place, and the home display gives the whole structure a top.

Because it is the level the operator lives on between tasks, the home display sets the tone for the entire interface. If it is calm and readable, the operator can trust that a quiet home screen means a quiet plant, and abnormal conditions genuinely stand out. If it is cluttered or noisy, the operator loses that baseline and has to work harder to tell normal from abnormal. Getting the home display right is therefore not a cosmetic choice; it shapes how quickly problems get noticed across everything below it.

What Belongs on a Home Display

A good home display shows the few things that answer whether the area is healthy, and no more. That typically means the key performance indicators for the area - the handful of numbers that summarize whether it is doing its job, such as overall production or throughput, a couple of critical pressures or levels, and any figure the operator is accountable for. It means the status of the major equipment - which units, trains, or pumps are running, stopped, or in trouble - shown compactly enough that the whole area fits on one screen. And it means visibility of active abnormal conditions, so that a new alarm or an equipment fault registers immediately.

Just as important is what belongs on the home display in the language it uses. High-performance design favors showing conditions as deviations from normal rather than as bare numbers, so the operator's eye is drawn to anything outside its expected range without having to read and interpret every value. Color is used sparingly, reserved for abnormal conditions, so that a splash of color on the home screen means something. The intent is that a healthy area looks unremarkable and any problem is the thing that stands out.

The hardest discipline is restraint, because there is always pressure to add one more number to the top screen. The test is whether the information helps the operator decide, from the overview, whether to drill down. If it does, it may belong; if it is detail that only matters once the operator is already looking at a specific unit, it belongs on a lower level. A home display that tries to show everything becomes a wall of data where nothing stands out, which defeats the entire purpose of having a top-level overview at all.

In a single plant the home display maps neatly onto a physical area, but distributed operations stretch that idea across geography. For an oil and gas operator with many wellpads, tank batteries, and stations, the equivalent of a home display is a fleet-wide overview: a single top-level screen that shows the status of every site at once, so a controller can see across the whole operation before drilling into any one location. The principle is identical - a broad, quiet overview at the top - but the area it summarizes is a map of remote sites rather than a section of one plant.

This is where centralized monitoring earns its keep, because the alternative is checking each site individually, which does not scale.
