It also doubles as a pressure-vacuum safety device, and it is one of the most common sources of tank emissions when it does not seal. Thief Hatch in one line: A thief hatch is a hinged, gasketed access hatch on the roof of an atmospheric storage tank. It lets an operator open the tank to gauge the level, take a sample, and check the fluid, and it acts as a pressure-vacuum relief point, lifting to vent overpressure or letting air in under vacuum.

What a Thief Hatch Does

The name comes from thieving - the practice of lowering a sampling device (a thief) into the tank to draw a sample of the oil and the oil-water interface. Through the open thief hatch a pumper can hand-gauge the liquid level with a gauge line, pull a sample to check BS&W and quality, and inspect the tank contents. It is the primary manual access to what is inside the tank.

Structurally it is a hinged lid over a nozzle on the tank roof, sealed by a gasket and held down by a weighted or spring-loaded mechanism, usually with a latch that can be locked. On a lease stock tank the thief hatch, the gauge/vent connections, and the tank's relief valve together manage access and pressure.

Pressure-Vacuum Relief and Emissions

Beyond access, the thief hatch is a safety relief device. Its lid is weighted or spring-set to lift at a small positive pressure, venting vapor before the tank overpressures, and to open under vacuum so the tank is not collapsed when liquid is drawn down fast. On many tanks this is a backup to a dedicated pressure-vacuum breather valve; on simpler tanks the hatch is a primary relief path.

Because it sits directly on the tank vapor space, a thief hatch that is left open, has a worn gasket, or is set to relieve at too low a pressure becomes a continuous leak of methane and VOCs. Regulators and operators have made hatch integrity a focus of emissions programs - keeping hatches latched, gaskets sound, and set pressures correct, so vapor goes to the vapor recovery unit or flare rather than out the hatch.

Thief Hatches, Automation, and Monitoring

Manual thieving through the hatch is still done, but automated tank gauges (radar or float level plus temperature) increasingly replace routine hand gauging, so the hatch is opened less often - which also cuts emissions and the safety exposure of standing over an open hatch of hydrocarbon vapor. Some operators add hatch position sensors that report open/closed status.
