The annotation appears at its point in time, usually as a flag or a marker the viewer can hover or click to read, so it sits exactly where its explanation is needed on the curve.

Annotations come from two sources. Some are authored by the operator, typed in at the moment or added afterward to explain a feature of the trend in their own words. Others are generated from events the system already knows about - a mode change, an equipment trip, a batch step - and placed automatically on the timeline as markers.
