What Is a Wellbore?

The wellbore is the hole itself - the drilled path from the surface down into the reservoir that everything else in a well is built around. Casing, tubing, packers, and perforations all exist to line, seal, and produce that hole. Wellbore in one line: A wellbore is the drilled hole that forms a well - the cylindrical path bored from the surface down through rock to the target reservoir. It is the physical conduit through which a well is drilled, lined with casing, completed, and later produces oil, gas, or water.

How a Wellbore Is Drilled and Built

A wellbore is cut by a rotating drill bit on the end of a drill string, while drilling mud is pumped down to clear cuttings, cool the bit, and hold back formation pressure. The hole is drilled in progressively smaller diameters - a wide surface section near the top, narrowing to a slim production section at total depth. This telescoping design is what lets casing strings nest inside one another.

As each section is drilled, it is typically lined with steel casing and cemented before drilling deeper, producing a stable, isolated hole rather than raw open rock. Wellbore diameter is measured in inches - a surface hole might be 12 to 17 inches while the productive section is 6 to 8 inches - and those numbers dictate what casing, tubing, and tools can pass through.

Open Hole, Cased Hole, and Trajectory

An open-hole section is bare drilled rock with no casing across it; a cased-hole section has steel casing cemented against the formation. Most wells are cased across the reservoir and then perforated to create flow paths, though some completions produce open hole or use slotted liners. The distinction drives how the well is completed, logged, and stimulated.

Wellbore trajectory can be vertical, deviated, or horizontal. A vertical wellbore drops more or less straight down; a horizontal wellbore turns and runs sideways through a thin or unconventional reservoir to expose thousands of feet of pay. Horizontal wellbores are the backbone of shale development, because a long lateral, once hydraulically fractured, contacts far more rock than a vertical hole ever could.

The Wellbore in Production and Monitoring

Once completed, the wellbore is the path production travels: reservoir fluids enter through perforations, flow up the production tubing inside the casing, and reach the wellhead. Everything an operator measures about a producing well - flowing tubing pressure, casing pressure, downhole gauge readings - describes conditions somewhere along that wellbore. Those surface measurements are digitized by a wellsite RTU or flow computer and reported to SCADA.
