What Is a Workover?

A workover is the maintenance surgery of the oil field - the major intervention that pulls a well apart to fix what has failed and put it back to work. When a pump quits, tubing corrodes, or a zone waters out, a workover restores or improves production. This guide explains what a workover is, the common jobs it covers, how a well is made safe first, and how it differs from drilling and completion.

Workover in one line: A workover is a major well-intervention operation to restore, maintain, or improve production from an existing well. It typically involves killing the well, pulling the production tubing and downhole equipment with a workover rig, performing repairs such as replacing a failed pump or reperforating, and running everything back in.

Common Workover Jobs

Workovers cover a range of remedial and enhancement jobs. On the repair side, they replace failed artificial-lift equipment - a burned-out electric submersible pump, worn sucker rods, or a parted tubing string - and address corrosion, scale, or sand problems downhole. On the enhancement side, they reperforate or add perforations, isolate a watered-out zone, convert the well to a different lift method, or open a new interval to production.

The distinguishing feature of a workover is that it usually requires pulling the tubing, which means the well must be entered and its downhole hardware retrieved. Lighter tasks done through the wellhead without pulling tubing - swapping a gas-lift valve on slickline, for instance - are generally called interventions rather than full workovers.

Killing the Well and the Workover Rig

Before a well can be opened for a workover, it normally has to be killed - brought under control so it will not flow while the tubing is out. This is done by circulating in a kill fluid, usually a weighted brine, heavy enough that its hydrostatic column balances the reservoir pressure. A blowout preventer is installed for well control during the operation, just as in drilling.

The work is performed by a workover rig - smaller and more mobile than a drilling rig but able to run pipe, pull tubing, and handle downhole tools. The rig removes the wellhead's production hardware, pulls the tubing string joint by joint, allows the repair or change to be made, then runs the completion back in and returns the well to production.

Workover vs Drilling, and the Production Picture

Drilling creates the wellbore; completion equips a new well to produce for the first time; a workover services or reconfigures a well that already exists. A workover does not drill new hole - it works over the existing well. It sits on the operating-expense side of a field's life, whereas drilling and initial completion are capital projects. The trigger for many workovers is a decline or anomaly seen in surface data: falling flow, a pump load signature, or a pressure trend.
