An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) in plain English: A Human-Machine Interface is the visual layer - a screen or dashboard - that lets an operator monitor and control an industrial process. It turns sensor and controller data into readable displays, and turns operator actions into commands back to the equipment.
An HMI presents a process visually: tank levels as fill bars, pressures on gauges, equipment states as color-coded symbols, and history as trend charts. It surfaces alarms so an operator knows when something is out of range, and it provides controls - setpoints, start/stop, acknowledge - so the operator can respond.
