What Is an HMI Alarm Banner?

The alarm banner is the thin strip that never leaves the screen. Docked at the top or bottom of every display, it shows the newest or highest-priority unacknowledged alarms so an operator sees them no matter which mimic, faceplate, or trend they happen to be looking at. It is not the full alarm list - that lives on the alarm summary - but the always-visible headline that guarantees a fresh alarm is not missed while the operator is buried in some other screen. In practice it is the single most-glanced-at region of an HMI.

What the Banner Shows and How It Behaves

The banner has a fixed, small footprint - often one to three lines - so it can live on every screen without stealing space from the process graphics. Within that space it shows the alarms that matter most right now: commonly the single highest-priority active unacknowledged alarm, or the most recent few, with each entry carrying its time, tag, description, and a priority indication. The point is triage at a glance, not completeness. An operator should be able to read the banner in a fraction of a second and know whether something new and serious has appeared.

Color and behavior encode urgency without requiring the operator to read every word. Priority drives the banner color - a consistent scheme where, say, the highest priority reads as red - so a critical alarm changes the look of the strip even in peripheral vision. Unacknowledged alarms typically blink or otherwise animate, and acknowledging them stops the motion, which cleanly separates what has been seen from what has not. This animation is deliberately reserved for the alarm state so that a moving banner always means an unhandled alarm and nothing else on the screen competes with it for that meaning.

The banner is usually interactive. Clicking an entry acknowledges the alarm, jumps to the affected equipment's display or faceplate, or opens the full alarm summary filtered to that point. That direct link is what turns the banner from a passive notice into a starting point for response: the operator sees the headline, clicks it, and lands where they can act. A banner that only displays but cannot be clicked forces the operator to go find the alarm elsewhere, which wastes the seconds the banner exists to save.

Alarm Banner Versus Alarm Summary

The banner and the alarm summary are complementary, and confusing them leads to poor designs of both. The alarm summary is a full, sortable, scrollable list of every active and unacknowledged alarm in the operator's area, with columns for time, tag, description, priority, and state. It is where the operator goes to work through everything that is abnormal and to acknowledge alarms methodically. It is a destination the operator navigates to, and it can be as long as the situation demands.

The banner is the opposite in every dimension. It is always present rather than navigated to, it is tiny rather than full-length, and it shows only the top slice rather than the whole list. Its job is notification and triage, not management. During normal operation the summary may be a click away and out of sight, but the banner is on screen constantly, acting as the tripwire that tells the operator when it is time to open the summary at all.

The two are designed to reinforce each other. The banner catches the operator's eye and provides the fast path in; the summary provides the depth to work the whole picture. A common failure is trying to make the banner do the summary's job by cramming too many alarms into it, which turns the strip into an unreadable scroll and defeats its at-a-glance purpose. Kept lean, the banner surfaces what is urgent and hands the operator off to the summary for everything else.

Alarm Banners in Cloud SCADA and Remote Operations

In a distributed operation the banner idea has to work across many sites at once.
