BS&W - basic sediment and water - is the single most-watched quality number on a crude oil lease. It is the fraction of a crude stream that is not sellable oil: free and emulsified water plus solid sediment. Every barrel sold or moved by pipeline must meet a BS&W specification, and exceeding it can get a load rejected. It is the key quality metric that determines whether treated oil is clean enough to sell; pipeline and purchase contracts typically cap it near 0.5 to 1 percent.

What BS&W Actually Measures

Crude oil produced from a well never arrives pure. It comes commingled with formation water, injected water, and fine solids like sand, scale, and clay. Some of that water separates out freely; some stays locked in a stubborn oil-water emulsion. BS&W lumps both the water (free and emulsified) and the sediment into one number, reported as a volume percent of the total stream. A reading of 0.5 percent BS&W means that in every 100 barrels measured, half a barrel is water and solids and 99.5 barrels are marketable oil.

BS&W matters commercially because a buyer or pipeline pays for oil, not water. Water in the stream also promotes internal corrosion, carries dissolved salts that foul refinery equipment, and adds dead weight to trucking and pumping. Contracts therefore set a maximum allowable BS&W - commonly 0.5 to 1 percent - and a load or continuous stream over that limit is downgraded or rejected.

How BS&W Is Measured

The classic laboratory method is the centrifuge test defined in API and ASTM procedures. A measured volume of crude is mixed with a solvent and demulsifier in a graduated centrifuge tube, spun at high speed, and the settled water plus sediment is read directly off the tube's scale as a percentage. It is simple, cheap, and the reference method for spot checks and dispute resolution.

For continuous and automated measurement, an inline BS&W monitor (also called a water-cut probe) sits in the flowing stream and infers water content from the mixture's electrical properties - typically capacitance or microwave absorption, since water and oil differ sharply in dielectric constant. On a LACT unit at the custody-transfer point, this probe reads BS&W in real time; if the water content spikes above a threshold, the LACT can divert the stream back to treating instead of accepting off-spec oil into the sales line.

Where BS&W Fits in Production and Sales

BS&W drives the treating process on a lease. Wet crude flows from the separator into a heater treater or free-water knockout, where heat, settling time, and demulsifier chemicals break the emulsion and drop the water out. Operators tune this process specifically to bring BS&W under the sales spec before the oil reaches the stock tanks and the sales point.

An inline BS&W or water-cut reading is a live analog value on the controller at the metering skid, so it can be trended, alarmed, and used in the net-volume calculation.
