Between the raw liquid volume in a tank and the temperature-corrected number that gets sold sits a specific, useful rung: the oil volume at the temperature it actually is. That middle rung is the gross observed volume, or GOV, and it is the number a lease operator most often reads and writes down on the tank. Gross observed volume (GOV) in one line: Gross observed volume (GOV) is the total observed volume of a tank minus its free water and bottom sediment, still at the observed temperature. It is the observed oil volume: everything in the tank that is oil, before any correction to standard reference conditions. GOV is the middle rung between raw total observed volume and temperature-corrected gross standard volume.

GOV as the Middle Rung: TOV Minus Free Water and Sediment

The custody volume ladder starts with total observed volume (TOV), the raw liquid volume read off the strapping table at the measured level, which still contains any free water and settled sediment along with the oil. GOV is the very next step: it is TOV with that free water and bottom sediment taken out. What remains is the observed oil volume, the oil and nothing but the oil, at whatever temperature the tank happens to be.

The deduction from TOV to GOV is done by gauging the water bottom separately. The operator finds the oil-water interface, reads the water level, and subtracts that water volume from the total, so the free water sitting under the oil is removed. Suspended sediment is handled similarly. The key point is that GOV is a subtraction of physical, separated water and sediment, not a correction, which is why it is still an observed volume.

It helps to name the rungs to keep them straight. TOV is total liquid; GOV is observed oil; then temperature correction turns GOV into gross standard volume (GSV) at reference conditions, and deducting the remaining basic sediment and water fraction from GSV gives net standard volume (NSV). GOV is precisely the observed oil in the middle, after free water is gone but before temperature is normalized.

Why GOV Is the Number the Operator Sees

GOV is the volume a lease operator most naturally works with at the tank because it is what you can actually observe and compute on site with a tape and a paste reading. You gauge the total level, gauge the water, subtract, and you have the observed oil, GOV, without needing a thermometer correction or reference-condition math. It is the honest snapshot of how much oil is physically in the tank right now.

What GOV deliberately does not include is temperature correction. Oil expands when warm and contracts when cool, so the same barrels of oil read as a larger GOV on a hot afternoon than on a cold morning, even though nothing was added or removed. That is why GOV is not yet the sellable number: two tanks with identical real oil content can show different GOVs simply because they are at different temperatures. Correcting for that is the next rung, GSV.

Because GOV stops just short of temperature correction, it is the clean handoff point between field observation and the standardized custody calculation. The operator establishes the observed oil, and then the volume correction factor for the liquid's temperature and density converts it to a standard-condition volume that can be compared and traded fairly. Understanding GOV as observed oil, not standard oil, is what keeps the two steps from being blurred together.

Removing the Manual Water-Draw Arithmetic with Automated Gauging

Done by hand, arriving at GOV is a small chain of manual steps: gauge the total level and look up TOV, gauge the water bottom, subtract to get observed oil, and write it down, for every tank each time. Every subtraction and lookup is a chance for a transcription or arithmetic error, and the result is only as fresh as the last tank climb. It is exactly the kind of repetitive calculation that is easy to get slightly wrong and hard to audit later.

Automated gauging collapses that chain. An automatic tank gauge measures the total level and the water interface, the system applies the strapping table to get TOV, and it subtracts the measured water and sediment to produce GOV directly, continuously, and identically for every tank. The manual water-draw arithmetic disappears; the operator sees observed oil computed from live readings rather than reconstructed by hand each shift.
