The short answer: An HMI (Human-Machine Interface) is the visual layer operators use to see and control a process. SCADA is the broader system that also acquires data from many field devices, alarms, historizes, and handles remote communications - with an HMI as its front end. Every SCADA has an HMI; a standalone HMI is not a full SCADA.
An HMI is specifically the operator interface: the screens showing gauges, trends, alarms, and controls for a machine or process. It can be a touchscreen on a panel showing one skid, or a supervisory display. Its job is visualization and operator interaction.
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is the whole system: it polls or subscribes to field devices (PLCs, RTUs) across many sites, manages alarms and notifications, stores history in a historian, and provides remote access - all presented through one or more HMIs.
On a single machine, the HMI and the "system" look like the same thing, so people call the panel screen "the SCADA." The distinction becomes obvious the moment you have many sites: you need data acquisition over wide-area comms, centralized alarming, and a historian - functions an HMI alone does not provide. That whole apparatus is SCADA; the screen you look at is its HMI.
