How to Aim a Directional Cellular Antenna

A directional antenna only earns its gain when it is pointed at the tower, and a beam that is a few degrees off can throw away most of the advantage you paid for. Aiming is a slow, deliberate sweep while you watch the radio metrics, not a guess by eye toward the nearest town. This procedure is for the technician mounting a Yagi or panel at a range-limited site who needs to peak the antenna on the serving cell and lock it there without chasing a transient.

Set Up to Read While You Aim

Aiming blind and checking afterward wastes trips; you want the metric changing in near real time as you swing the antenna. Sweep Slowly and Peak on the Stable Reading

Rotate the antenna through the suspected direction in small increments, pausing at each position long enough for the radio to settle before you judge it. Cellular metrics lag and jitter, so a fast sweep will smear the peak and you will miss it. Watch RSRP climb toward a maximum and note the heading where it is strongest, then keep going past it: a directional antenna has side lobes, and a strong reading that is much weaker than a nearby stronger one means you are on a side lobe, not the main beam.

Peak on the heading that holds the best stable RSRP with acceptable RSRQ. If two headings give similar RSRP, favor the one with cleaner RSRQ, because that is the less-congested, less-noisy path. Aiming for RSRP alone can land you pointed at a strong but overloaded cell that will stall under traffic. Sweep a little past the peak in both directions and return to center it, so you are on the middle of the main lobe rather than its edge, where a small mount shift or a windy day will detune it.

Lock, Reconfirm, and Record

Tighten the mount hardware while watching the metrics, because the act of clamping can nudge the antenna off peak. If the reading drops as you tighten, loosen, recenter, and try again until it stays put when locked. A directional antenna that reads well only while you are holding it is not commissioned; it is a future callout. Reconfirm the final RSRP and RSRQ once your hands are off and the mount is fully tight.

Record the final heading, band, carrier, and the locked RSRP and RSRQ in the site connectivity file. The heading matters as much as the numbers, because if the antenna ever needs re-aiming after storm damage, knowing where it was pointed saves a fresh sweep. This record joins the survey and cable-loss budget as the site's RF baseline.

How do I know if I am aimed at the main lobe or a side lobe?

Sweep past the peak in both directions. A directional antenna has a strong main lobe and weaker side lobes, so if you find a good reading but a nearby heading gives a clearly stronger one, your first heading was a side lobe. Keep sweeping until you find the single strongest peak, then center on it.

Should I peak on RSRP or RSRQ when aiming?

Peak on RSRP to find the tower, but break ties with RSRQ. When two headings give similar RSRP, choose the one with cleaner RSRQ, because that is the less-congested path that will hold up under load. Aiming for raw RSRP alone can lock you onto a strong but overloaded cell that stalls when the site pushes data.

Why does my reading drop when I tighten the mount?

Clamping the hardware often nudges a narrow-beam antenna off peak. Watch the metrics while you tighten, and if the reading falls, loosen, recenter on the peak, and retighten until it holds.
