The bubbles on a P&ID get all the attention, but the lines connecting them carry just as much information, and they are easy to misread. ISA-5.1 gives each kind of signal a distinct line style, so an electrical wire, a pneumatic tube, and a software link look different at a glance. Process Lines Versus Instrument Signal Lines

The first distinction is between the heavy lines that carry process fluid and the lighter lines that carry instrument signals. Process piping is drawn as a bold continuous line, because it moves the actual product, steam, or utility. Instrument connection lines are thinner and carry information rather than mass, and their style then encodes what kind of information. Keeping process lines and signal lines separate in your reading is the first step, because confusing a signal line for a pipe leads to nonsense.

A signal line always connects to an instrument bubble, and its style tells you the medium. The plainest instrument connection, the impulse or process-to-instrument line, links the sensing point to the device. From there the signal leaves the device over an electrical, pneumatic, or software connection, each with its own line style, so the drawing shows not just that two devices talk but how. This is the same chain a pressure transmitter follows from tap to signal output.

Each signal medium has a recognizable line style, summarized below. The exact rendering varies slightly by drawing package and revision of the standard, so the legend on the specific P&ID is always the final word.

The electrical style covers the workhorse HART-capable 4-20 mA loop that most field transmitters use, while the software-link style is reserved for connections that live inside the control system rather than on physical wire.

The software or data-link style matters more every year, because a growing share of connections between control-system functions are logical rather than physical. When two bubbles are joined by the software-link style, no wire runs between them; the connection is a data path inside a shared system, and it is often drawn to a shared or logic-solver symbol. Recognizing the software link stops you from hunting for a physical cable that does not exist and points you to the control-system configuration instead.

Why the Line Style Changes How You Troubleshoot

The line style is not decoration; it tells you where to put your meter. A dashed electrical line means the connection is wiring you can measure, so a suspected fault on that link is checked with a multimeter or a loop calibrator at the terminals. A double-slash pneumatic line means the connection is a tube carrying instrument air, so the same fault is chased with a pressure gauge and a leak check, not an ammeter. Reading the line style first saves you from testing the wrong medium.

A software-link line changes the troubleshooting again: there is nothing physical to probe, so a broken connection is a configuration or communication problem investigated in the control system. When a value stops updating across a software link, the fault lives in the mapping, the poll, or the network, and it surfaces as a stale or bad-quality SCADA tag rather than a dead loop current. Matching the diagnostic method to the line style is a small habit that keeps troubleshooting pointed at the right layer.
