How Oil Leaves the Battery
Oil leaves a tank battery one of two ways. Trucking (haul-off) means a driver gauges the tank, takes a sample, and loads oil into a tanker - custody is transferred by tank gauge or ticket. A LACT unit (Lease Automatic Custody Transfer) automates the same handoff for pipeline delivery, measuring volume with a meter, sampling for BS&W, and recording the transfer without a person present.
Either way, the stock tanks are the custody point - the last place the operator controls the oil before ownership changes - so accurate tank levels and volumes are directly tied to revenue and reconciliation.
Monitoring a Tank Battery
Because a battery aggregates a whole lease's production, it is a natural place to concentrate monitoring: tank levels, separator and treater conditions, gas meter volumes, dump cycles, and high-level or overflow alarms. Rising tank levels warn that hauling is due; a stuck dump or a treater off temperature shows up quickly.
An RTU or flow computer at the battery reads these signals, and a cloud SCADA such as Merobix polls it over Modbus or DNP3 so tank levels, alarms, and throughput across many batteries are visible from one dashboard - useful when one pumper covers dozens of leases.
Layout and Sizing Decisions
Battery layout is mostly storage arithmetic and access. Tank count and size are set by production rate against haul or pipeline capacity, with enough working volume to ride out the longest realistic gap between pickups - a holiday weekend, a muddy lease road - without hitting high level. The containment berm is sized to the applicable regulation, generally referenced to the largest tank it encloses, and its integrity matters as much as its volume: a breached or rain-filled dike protects nothing. All of these are site-specific numbers that come from the operator's own production and trucking history.
The rest of the layout is practical: firm all-weather truck access to the loadout with room to turn, separation between the tanks and fired equipment like the heater treater, space for a workover rig to come back to the wells, and instrument and gauging access that does not require climbing over piping. Batteries grow by accretion as wells are added, and the ones that stay workable are the ones where the original layout left room for it.
Problems That Show Up at the Battery First
Because the battery concentrates a lease's whole flow path, it is where trouble surfaces. A stuck oil dump on the separator carries liquid into the gas line; a stuck water dump sends water to the oil tanks and blows the sales spec. A treater burner out on a cold night lets wet oil through. Paraffin narrows dump lines and gauge columns. An open or leaking thief hatch vents tank vapors and spoils any pressure-based level reading. In winter, freeze-ups in water legs and instrument lines produce a morning's worth of false readings and stuck valves.
A pumper's round is built to catch these early:
- Gauge or verify level on each oil tank and the water tank; compare against expected production since the last visit.
- Check separator and treater operating pressure, temperature, and dump action.
- Look and listen at the tanks: hatches seated, no venting, no staining on the berm.
- Confirm the gas meter or flow computer is reading and the sales line is open.
- Walk the containment for standing fluid and drain it per site procedure if clean.
Levels, Tickets, and Reconciliation
Custody at a trucked battery still runs on gauging: the driver takes an opening gauge, loads, takes a closing gauge, and the difference - corrected for temperature and the sediment and water from the sample - becomes the run ticket volume. That makes the stock tanks the lease's cash register, and level measurement quality a revenue issue rather than a convenience. Automatic tank gauges and manual tapes coexist on many leases; when they disagree, the difference has to be understood, not averaged.
Reconciliation closes the loop: hauled or metered volumes out, plus inventory change in the tanks, should account for measured production in, with produced water tracked the same way through to disposal. A persistent imbalance points at a specific culprit - a mis-gauged tank, a drifting meter, an unrecorded haul - and the battery is where the evidence lives. Operators who reconcile every month find these problems in weeks; operators who do not find them at audit.
