Embedded Trend (Sparkline) in one line: An embedded trend, often called a sparkline, is a small inline trend line placed directly beside a value on a process graphic, showing that value's recent history in a compact space. Without opening a separate trend page, an operator sees the recent trajectory and rate of change - whether a value is steady, drifting, or oscillating - which turns a bare snapshot into a reading of direction. It is a core high-performance HMI element for supporting the projection level of situational awareness.

Direction Without Leaving the Screen

The whole point of an embedded trend is to give the operator direction alongside magnitude in one glance. A digital value or even a moving analog indicator shows the present state, but the recent trajectory - is this level climbing, falling, or holding - is what tells the operator whether to be concerned. Traditionally, getting that meant opening a full trend display, which takes an action, occupies a screen, and pulls attention away from the process graphic. The embedded trend removes that step by drawing a small line, typically covering the last minutes or hours, right beside the value where the operator is already looking.

Because it is inline and unobtrusive, an embedded trend can be placed next to many values across a graphic without the clutter a dozen full trend charts would create. The operator scanning a screen sees not just where each value is but which way each is heading, all at once. A flat sparkline reads as calm; one bending upward toward a value's limit signals a developing problem the operator can act on early. This is the projection level of situational awareness delivered directly on the operating screen, so the operator anticipates rather than reacts.

Embedded Trend Versus a Full Trend Display

An embedded trend and a full trend display serve different needs, and a good HMI uses both. The embedded trend is about awareness in context: it is small, always visible beside its value, shows a short recent window, and is meant to be read at a glance without interaction - its job is to answer, instantly, which way is this heading. It is not for detailed analysis; it usually has no readable axis labels and no ability to zoom or scroll. Each embedded trend typically shows one value, keeping it simple and unambiguous.

A full trend display is the analytical tool. It is a dedicated chart where the operator overlays several pens on shared axes, scrolls back over hours, days, or weeks of history, reads precise values off the axes, and compares variables to diagnose a problem. When the embedded trend on a graphic shows a value drifting, the operator opens the full trend to investigate in depth - to overlay related tags, check how long the drift has been building, and compare against past periods. The embedded trend is the always-on early signal; the full trend display is where the operator goes to understand and confirm what that signal means.

Embedded Trends on Live Field Data

An embedded trend needs recent history to draw, which in a SCADA context comes from the platform storing the values it reads from the field.
